Around the Starkenburg Heppenheim many legends have grown up. Some of them act of black dogs, the best known of these dogs is the guardian spirit of the castle, Melampus.
Melampus was the black dog of a miller, who was a trusted staff member. Melampus was brought as a brave and eager learner messages and protect the castle and courageous people.
When the castle was under siege, he made the lords at the invading enemies attention, who wanted to sneak through a secret tunnel, which could indeed be repressed, but Melampus cost him his life.
